Things to Know About Steel Pipe and Its Use

Look around you. Steel pipe is everywhere! Anywhere you turn or look, you may see some sort of structure or way of a conduit, that steel pipe is used for. And that is not to mention that the pipe that is “out of sight out of mind” that’s serving its purpose under the ground.

Conventional or nominal pipe sizes are found on a pipe graph that’s used throughout the business. If you don’t know anything about N.P.S., then it’s recommended that you take a look at the chart before buying any or doing any jobs with the pipe.

There are essentially three different kinds of pipe, and they vary in the way they were manufactured. There’s a seamless steel pipe that starts as a solid round and after being heated nearly to a melting stage, a hole is pierced through the center with an instrument and generates the pipe. The Skelp is maneuvered through a set of rollers which make it round and then as the borders come together, an electrical welder makes the longitudinal seam down the length of the pipe. The final and used manufacturing method is “Buttweld” steel pipe. It’s fundamentally the same process as the ERW pipe, except after being rolled up, the edges are warmed up and fused to create the pipe. A bigger O.D. steel pipe can be made by rolling and welding pieces of steel plate to cylinders or “Cans” and then welding them together end to end to make the pipe.

Steel pipe is anywhere. The pipe can be fabricated for several purposes. Look at the Big O.D. Pipe being used for design constructions when traveling down almost any street. It’s used in parking lots, for “Bollards” or “Bumper Posts”. Nearly any restaurant or place of business has an outside signal mounted on a rod made of steel. Look at all the galvanized pipes used for highway signs. That is just to name a couple of structural applications.

In addition to each of the structural applications, the pipe is utilized by the mile to get potable water lines and drainage functions. Pipe used for “Casing Pipe” that is pulled or jacked to the ground, to encase and protect utility lines under highways, railroads, lakes, and rivers. Nevertheless, the main use of a new prime pipe product is “Line Pipe” which is employed in the petroleum and gas industry for the conveyance of product from the rig into the refinery.
